Hi everyone. Today, I’ll be writing about the Flipped Classroom Video of 5th-grade health unit vocabulary teaching we created with my friend Simge.
Our task was to create a flipped classroom teaching video. So, what is a Flipped Classroom? Well, a flipped classroom is a pedagogical approach in which traditional classroom lecturing is reversed with homework and assignments. The difference between traditional teaching and flipped classroom is that in the flipped classroom approach the learning occurs outside of the classroom whereas, in traditional teaching, the students are expected to learn the inside of the classroom.
There are many advantages of a Flipped Classroom. One of them is that the students can learn at their own pace. They do not have to keep up with the pace of others nor the teacher. They can slow down or fasten the speed however they like. One other advantage of a Flipped Classroom is that the students can apply their learning styles into their learning experiences themselves. They can watch videos designed for flipped classroom approach wherever or whenever they want, and this can lead to a less stressful and more encouraging, and motivational learning experience. The only disadvantage that comes to mind is that creating videos using Flipped Classroom approach might be a lot of work for the teacher since it takes a lot of time and energy to create. However, the teacher can find/use already designed videos on the Internet or can create videos themselves and use them over and over since they will be teaching the same topic to another class.
Now I want to talk about our experience with creating a video for a Flipped Classroom. Firstly, I want to say that it was a very challenging but fun and interesting experience. We did a lot of Zoom sessions and recorded a lot of voice to put into our video. We used a website called Vimeo with the Windows Photos application since Vimeo did not provide enough features to complete the video. Vimeo is not a free website yet; it provides us with a 1-month free trial so we can try and use all its features. However, we encountered some problems, for example, it did not allow us to put our voice recordings into the video or to lower the volume of the background music. So, we had to use the Photos application to add our voices into it and put the background music under the voice recordings. All in all, it was a great experience. Simge and I both agreed to use this approach in our future lessons.
Moreover, we created a vocabulary matching worksheet so that the students can apply what they have learned during the lessons.
Now, here is our 5th-grade Health Unit Vocabulary Teaching Video:

Additionally, we created a Kahoot quiz. The teacher can use the code below to play it during the lesson and create a fun and stress-free learning environment.
Here is the Kahoot code: 336 2413
